Fruit characters – designs/development work

My animation is going to be about food characters that are in a human beings kitchen. They argue about being trapped and the grape really wants to try and escape but the orange is not so bothered. So the grape convinces the orange to help it to try to escape – things do not go as planned. The actually story may change a little as i develop the characters, but they are definitely going to bein kitchen, they are definitely going to be food characters, and they will definitely need to get over an obstacle for some reason.

These first drawings are also in my other blog post from this project – but there are newer ones i just wanted to have all the different character designs and drawings in this post to show the development and keep it in one place.


I’m not sure how i feel about the thick black outline around everything – so i’m going to have to do a few different designs and play around with it and see what i like the look of.

So I played around with a few different idea’s for his features. The same mouths/eyes/ etc will all be allocated to the other characters in this animation as well – to keep things (design) consistent.




The dimension on this drawing are better- the grape compared next to the orange is about the right size now. They both appear to be pretty grumpy right now! ūüėõ




Orange: “Mm hmm”


Orange: “Mm Hmm”

Grape: “THEY ARE!”

Orange: “Well what are we going to do anyway?”

Grape: “We could, we could escape!”

Orange: “Escape? How?”

Both look around, and over the edge.

Grape: “That is a looooong way down.”

Orange: “Mm Hmm”

Grape: “Maybe we could jump across and get out that window.”

Orange: “You think we could jump that?”

Grape: “Maybe…”

Orange: “Ok you first.”

Grape thinks about it, looks like he’s taking a run upa nd about to jump but then shakes his head. Then gets a good idea and walks up to orange.

Grape: “Throw me.”

Orange: “Throw you?!?!”

Grape: “Throw me.”

Orange: “Are you sure?!”

Grape: “We’ve got no choice.”

Orange: “There’s always a…”

Interrupting Grape: “Just do it. Throw me.”

Orange picks up grape and holds him up

Orange: “Ok. You ready?”

Grape: “Yeah, lets do this!”

Orange: “Ok. 3… 2…. 1….”

orange throw grape, grape flies through the air, he looks magnificent and then doesn’t make it, disappearing to the floor below. Orange peers over the edge down where grape went.

Orange: “whoops…”

Orange disappears from view and we are left wondering what happened to grape.




I’ve still been working on the script…

…but it’s coming together.

I also very roughly and quickly drew up a storyboard for the whole animation. I will need to do a more in depth one and begin working on the animatronic? [blocking out the animation to the script, etc]

23-01-2017 – Class notes and stuff!

In class today we were asked to check out a short animation and write down how many shots were used and their duration – to make us consider how many shots we would need for our own animations. I tried to look for animations with similar amounts of dialogue exchange.

The first aniation i watched was called “SLITHER.IO LOGIC (CARTOON ANIMATION)”

I stopped here in the animation because i was distracted by someone and started a discussion on what we were doing, but it covers over a minute of animation anyway. Which is good because our animation is supposed to be around one minute long.

So for this animation i got 21 shots in total for 73.5 seconds ( 1 minute 13 seconds and a half :P) These ranged from shots that lasted less than a second to shots lasting around 9 seconds. This animation didn’t have straight back and forth dialogue between just two characters, but characters did exchange dialogue.

The next animation i watched was called “What about a man” and is one of my favourite short animations ever!

So this animation was a bit longer than the 1 minute mark, but it still shows actually a similar ratio of shots/time.

There were 26 shots for first minute and 29 shots for seconds minute. There was a bit more back and forth dialogue, but also more action that changed as they character described different scenes that were animated, so there were more shots than the previous animation.

So what i’ve found from just looking at these two animations was that for one minute of animation there could be anywhere from between around [approx] 20 – 30 shots. Which range from less than one second to 9 seconds per shot. It really depends on the animation itself and what is happening exactly what kind of shots and how many and length of shots etc you would want.

So thats 27 different shots for this animation that i’ve worked out so far. Based on today’s class that sounds about right… The animation should be around 1 minute in length, give or take a few seconds and have just under 30 shots. The two characters talk and there is most action at the end of the animation.

Orange: Banana’s don’t care…

*shot of bananas rotting in the fruit bowl with silly grins on their faces.

Lime: The banana’s are clearly insane. We need to do something!

Orange: What can we do? We’ve been all around this island and there’s no way off.

*Both walk to edge and look over.

Orange: You can’t climb or jump down, the fall would kill you. We’re stuck here…

Lime: Throw me.

Orange: Throw you?

Lime: Throw me!

Orange: Throw you?!! Where?!!

Lime: Over there. If i can get over there i could get out window.

Orange: Then what?

Lime: I will gather an army the likes of which this world has never seen before and i will bring it back here and i will completely destroy the bastards that put us here to die!!

And ill rescue you of course, but i need you to throw me.

Orange: I don’t think…

Lime: Don’t think. What else can we do? It’s our best shot. I know you can do this.

Orange: Ok. ok. I’ll do it, lets do this.

Lime: Alright lets do this!

… *Orange picks up lime

Orange: Ok then. Good luck. Here goes…

*Orange launches lime who flies through the air.

*Lime falls comically short of the counter and falls towards the ground.

Lime: Ohhhhhhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii…

Orange winces as lime hits the ground.

Orange: Whoops.

Note: The coloured 0’s are for shots that i think will be the same angle/ camera position etc. I’ve not really got any moving shots in their yet either, still figuring stuff out as i storyboard and animate this one, but the framework is getting there. I might want to do a couple of slow panning shots and stuff, am going to test ideas in the animatic as well.


So thinking about the final idea for my animation. There are two characters. A lime and an Orange who have arms and legs and faces. They are in a kitchen and want to escape, as they know that they could be eaten. The Orange has resigned themselves to being stuck with no way off the island they are on but the Lime is desperate for a way out of their predicament. He plans to escape and then when he does he will gather an army to crush his kidnappers and seek revenge! The plan is for Orange to throw him to the other side of the kitchen so he can get out of the window. Lime convinces Orange to throw him. Orange throw him and the plan fails terribly. The Orange looks down where the Lime fell with a sheepish look on his face: Whoops. And the animation ends and credits roll.

Its a story about two captives who must escape from danger. They come up with a plan which fails brilliantly. The moral of the story is to not be convinced of dumb ideas you know are dumb, no matter how awful your predicament seems. Or maybe it’s that sometimes you have to throw a Hail Mary and sometimes that doesn’t work out. Or maybe the moral of the story is there are no morals and stories don’t always have to have morals, or even satisfying endings. Maybe the characters are just interesting, their actions confusing and sad. Characters in a tough situation not able to think of a better way out, completely failing. And thinking about the humans finding a lime rolled onto the floor is funny to me for some reason…

That extra possible ending is supposed to be ridiculous and funny that Lime got busted up. Although maybe its not funny, a fruit character getting brain damaged. Maybe brain damage isn’t a good source of comedy really. So i’m gonna think about that one a bit. It could be that lime is fine and is ready to go again and the animation ends with him asking Orange to throw him again and that’s the punchline. Not that it needs a punchline really, animation is certainly a medium in which to explore storytelling at its core, so i can sort of do whatever. Its fine! It’ll be fine…

It’s basically low brow humour and cheap laughs, but whats important is the 2D animation and bringing the characters to life. So i’m just going to concentrate on beginning to animate what i have so far worked out and then keep thinking about the ending as i go forward.

I like the idea of these characters being in this dangerous odd situation they have to get out of. I like the bait and switch with the island pun at the beginning. I like that they don’t succeed and they’ve gone so big so quick they have no way to fix their mistake. They just screw up big time and it costs one of them everything, and the other is left with the memory. It’s supposed to be kind of sad really, a tale of failure.

The orange and fruit are alive and that’s magical. Normally when things come to life in animations (cars in cars, furniture in Beauty and the beast, etc) they are cute and good guys and they help the protagonist in some way and its for kids and happy, etc. So the juxtaposition of these lovable characters in this awful situation is interesting to me. The odds are stacked against them and they;re a bit weird but we want them to succeed and get out and form an army and stuff. When they fail so badly its a surprise, as we normally expect the heroes to win. We root for the underdog. And then they just make such a hash of it so quickly and you’re left wondering how that just happened. If it makes the audience react at all that’s a win.

Character designs development:

I have been thinking about whether to have a black outline or not, in the end I think I probably will. There are a few ways around it, like in the next drawing, where the arms and legs are different colours to the main body. I actually quite like the way it looks so ultimately I just need to choose one and go with it. I might even use different coloured limbs for one and an outline for the other. sketch-1486418453079.png

How the characters look against the 3D background will probably help to influence my decision. Please note some of these are just quick rough sketches of the characters, with slightly different features as I’ve been developing the characters.


I gave the cherry a moustache and goatee, I’m not sure if he will retain them in the final animation.


In these drawing that I’ve done I think the black outline really helps the character pop.

The characters are a really simple cartoon style, with a three fingered design for simplicity when animating. I will be pretty frugal with my movements, and there will be a more shots with no body movement, only facial movements. But the whole face can move around the body on the orange and the a little less so on the cherry. sketch-1486414259942.png

I was thinking of just adding a shadow, but maybe some shine to the fruit would be good as well. I will have to do some experimenting as i’m animating the see what I like. Maybe even reflecting the windows light and stuff in the character eyes.


The orange is bigger than the cherry, a lot bigger. It needs to be that the audience believes that the orange really will easily be able to throw the cherry to the other side, because the cherry is the sort of size that actually it might be possible. So that when the orange fails terribly it is more of a surprise. So the below picture is probably closer to the size I want, but possibly the cherry could be even smaller in comparison to the orange. (The outline on the cherry is a bit thick in this drawing…) I’m still liking the elbow and knee knobbly bits for the characters.


I decided that the cherry will convince the orange to throw him with the phrase “I know you can do it” and “You can definitely do it, I know you can.” In a really sincere voice. So that when the orange fails to throw the cherry he calls down “I thought you said I could do it?!” or “Is that what you wanted to happen?” I’ve been trying to think of some kind of punchline and this is probably the closest I’m going to get.
